What counts as an emergency

  • Total or partial loss of power that isn't a SA Power Networks outage (check their outage map first; if the street is dark, it's them).
  • A safety switch or breaker that trips and won't stay reset, or trips again as soon as load comes on.
  • Burning smells, discolouration or heat at a switchboard, power point or light fitting.
  • Water into electrical equipment after a leak or storm.
  • A breakdown that has stopped a business: a cool room, a production line, a medical practice, a kitchen.
  • Exposed or damaged wiring after building work, a vehicle strike or an animal.

How fast, honestly

During working hours, an electrician is dispatched from wherever the nearest available van is, and we'll give you a real time on the phone rather than a hopeful one. Response depends on the day and how far you are from the nearest crew. That's the same for every electrician in Adelaide; the difference is whether they tell you.

Outside 6am to 6pm, or on weekends, we attend by agreement. For a household, that means a phone call to see what's possible. For a business that can't afford to be down overnight, we'd rather set the arrangement up before you need it: who to call, what the after-hours rate is, and which sites we've already been inducted on.

What after-hours work costs

After-hours attendance costs more than a scheduled weekday visit, for the simple reason that someone is being called out of their evening. We're upfront about the rate before anyone leaves the depot. What we won't do is give you a fixed price for a fault we haven't seen. A tripping board can be a $150 faulty appliance or a switchboard that needs replacing, and pretending to know which over the phone helps nobody. Our electrician cost guide sets out the typical Adelaide ranges for call-outs and hourly rates.

After the emergency

An emergency is usually a symptom. A board that trips under load is often a board at the end of its life; a burnt GPO is often the last one on an overloaded circuit. Once the immediate fault is fixed we'll tell you what caused it and whether a switchboard upgrade, fault finding or a maintenance arrangement would stop it happening again. You decide from there.

FAQs

Emergency electrician questions

Are you a 24-hour electrician?

No, and we'd rather say so than promise it and miss. Our hours are 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Out-of-hours attendance is arranged by agreement, which works well for businesses that set it up in advance and reasonably well for households that call and ask.

How soon can you attend?

During working hours, as soon as the nearest available electrician can get to you, and we'll give you a real time when you call rather than a hopeful one. We prioritise faults that have stopped a business or made a property unsafe.

What's the call-out fee for an emergency?

It depends on the time of day and where you are, and we tell you the rate before anyone leaves. What we won't do is fix a price for a fault we haven't seen. See our cost guide for the typical Adelaide ranges.

The whole street is dark. Is that you?

That's SA Power Networks. Check their outage map first. If your property is the only one out, or you've lost power on some circuits and not others, that's when to call an electrician.

Can a business set up a priority arrangement?

Yes, and we recommend it for anything that runs outside our hours or can't be down for long: production sites, medical practices, cool rooms, hospitality. We agree the contact, the rate and the sites in advance so the call at 9pm is a 1-minute conversation.
