What "after hours" means for an electrician, and what it costs

After hours means outside the electrician's normal working day, and in Adelaide it typically costs 1.5 to 2 times the weekday rate. Whether it's worth paying depends on the fault. A dead fridge full of stock, a burning smell or a business that can't open is worth it. 1 dead power point in a spare room isn't. Our day starts at 6am, which takes a lot of "after hours" calls out of the after-hours bracket.

What counts as after hours

For most Adelaide electricians the normal day is roughly 7am or 7:30am to 4pm or 5pm, Monday to Friday. Anything outside that, including weekends and public holidays, is after hours. Ours is 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, which is longer than most, and out-of-hours work is available by agreement. The rate for that is agreed before anyone leaves the depot, never on the invoice.

What it costs

The typical Adelaide structure is a call-out fee plus an hourly rate at a loading. Our electrician cost guide has the market ranges in detail, but the short version is:

So a 1-hour after-hours fault call in Adelaide commonly lands between $250 and $400 all in. That's a market range, not our quote; ours is agreed on the phone before we come.

Faults worth paying after hours for

Anything that smells hot or looks burnt. Switchboard, power point, light fitting. Turn it off at the board and call.
A business that can't trade. A cafe with no power on a Saturday morning loses more in an hour than the call-out costs.
Refrigeration, medical or IT equipment down. Stock, patients and data all cost more than the loading.
Water and electricity together. A flooded room with live outlets, a leaking roof over the switchboard.
Vulnerable people without heating or cooling on an extreme-weather day.

Faults that can wait until 6am

1 circuit out that you can live without overnight.
A light that doesn't work when the rest do.
A safety switch that tripped once, reset, and held.
A power point that's stopped working with nothing else wrong.

Why our 6am start matters

Most "after hours" calls we get are at 7pm to 10pm from someone who wants it fixed before they go to work. With a 6am start, we can often be there before they leave the house, at the weekday rate. The same applies to commercial sites: a fault found at close of business is fixed before the doors open, without a night rate. Do you charge a call-out fee after hours?

Out-of-hours work is by agreement and the rate, including any call-out, is confirmed on the phone before we leave. There are no surprises on the invoice.

Is it cheaper to wait until morning?

Usually, yes, if the fault is safe to leave. Turn the affected circuit off at the switchboard and book the first slot. If there's any burning smell, buzzing or water near electricity, don't wait.

Do you cover weekends?

By agreement, yes. Planned weekend work, such as a shutdown or a fit-out that has to happen while a business is closed, is quoted in advance. Urgent weekend faults are handled case by case.
